Bharti Airtel Inks Contracts to Build Southeast Asia Japan Cable System

New Delhi, India, 10 December, 2009 : Bharti Airtel today signed a landmark agreement with several other operators to build and operate the Southeast Asia Japan Cable system (SJC), a new international submarine cable system with the highest capacity in the world. The new cable system will address broadband demand by providing much needed capacity and faster, more reliable connectivity to sustain the unprecedented growth in data, web applications and Internet traffic throughout Asia.

The SJC system, estimated to cost US$400 million and measure 8300 km, will initially link Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, and Japan. The 6-fiber-pair high capacity submarine cable system has a design capacity of 17 Terabits per second (Tbps) upgradeable to 23 Tbps, the highest capacity system ever built so far.

Speaking on the occasion David Nishball, President- Enterprise Services, Bharti Airtel said,”The launch of the Southeast Asia Japan Cable System will significantly enhance the region's telecom infrastructure by delivering better and diverse connectivity. This system will provide large capacities to our customers to meet all their global connectivity needs and exceed their service level expectations. This cable link also synergises with our existing high speed connectivity from India to Singapore on i2i and from Japan to US on Unity creating a high speed terabit highyway for us between India and the United states, This cable system is an important milestone in the telecommunications infrastructure and Bharti Airtel is proud to be part of the global consortium to build the same.”

Initiating parties to this breakthrough project include players like Bharti Airtel, Globe Telecom (Philippines), Google (USA), KDDI (Japan) and Telemedia Pacific Inc. (Hong Kong/Indonesia). Other initial parties have signified their intent to participate in the project once requisite approvals have been obtained

The initiating parties signed the agreements in Manila on December 10, 2009. The SJC is targeted to be operational by the second quarter of 2012.

This study captures the preference and choice of over 116 million mobile users located across India. Based on the compilation of data that captures all downloaded content by an Airtel Mobile user during 2009, Airtel Mobitude is an annual survey that will be released by Bharti Airtel at the end of every calendar year.

“Airtel Mobitude 2009 reflects the true choice of India. A mobile phone is considered by many as an intrinsic part of their daily life, be it a user in a small village or in a large town. It fulfills a consumer’s social and entertainment needs, from communicating with others, to downloading music, images and games.” Said, Mr. Atul Bindal, President- Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel Ltd., He further added, “With over 116 million mobile users, Airtel is best positioned to highlight the preference and choice of India cutting across geographies, demographics, genre and age. Our consumer usage analysis has thrown up very interesting results that truly highlight what an Indian prefers across the length and breadth of India.”

Spreading across different parameters, Airtel Mobitude 2009 highlights interesting choices and preferences of ‘Mobile India’. For instance, Katrina Kaif and Aamir Khan were the most downloaded celebrities on an Airtel mobile beating the likes of Kareena Kapoor, Salman and Shahrukh Khan. Surprisingly, the survey also showcased that mobile users prefer to download a lot of Hollywood celebrities’ as much as Bollywood superstars.

Airtel has India’s largest music collection across both mobile and digital categories. Over 200 million music downloads were completed by Airtel users in 2009. The study reflected that maximum music was downloaded by mobile users in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharastra and Punjab. Regional music was as popular as Hindi songs in all these States. Surprisingly Jab Dekho Phone Kar Dete Ho, an April Fool Joke is the most downloaded music ahead of Jai Ho of Slumdog Millionaire.

The Indian Cricket team still rules supreme in the popularity charts amongst (Male) sports personalities. International Tennis Player Rafael Nadal completes the top five in this category. Beware of Fraudulent Phone callers

New Delhi, January 05, 2010 :Bharti Airtel would like to inform the general public of some fraudulent activity that has potential to impact customers of several mobile operators.

Airtel has learnt that customers are arbitrarily being targeted by callers who pretend to be calling on behalf of the customer’s telecom operator and inform the recipient that he/she has won a lottery/award conducted by the respective telecom operator.

In such instances, the customer receives a missed call from a number starting with +92. Upon returning the missed call (with the indicated country code) the unsuspecting customer reaches a fraudster pretending to be representative of Airtel or another mobile operator and informs the customer of having won an operator-sponsored lottery. The fraudster then attempts to con the customer into divulging sensitive personal information and to pay a “commission” to receive the winnings. Such commission is usually asked to be paid via DTH recharge vouchers.

Bharti Airtel would like to warn its customers that these are calls from fraudsters with malicious intent and they do not represent the company.

Accordingly, Airtel would like to issue a general advisory to all mobile/landline users to protect them from such malicious activities. These include:.

• Avoid responding to suspicious missed calls from unknown numbers, especially those beginning with +92.
• Do not respond to any SMS from unknown sources prompting to call on a number. ;
• Refrain from sharing any personal information & identity proofs like Voter ID Number, PAN Number, Bank Account Number, Credit Card information or make any payment to people promising lottery or other unexpected awards.
• Do not disclose your handset IMEI or SIM card number to unknown callers. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique code given by handset manufacturer for your number. This can be obtained by pressing *#06#.
• In case of suspicious calls, report the same to the concerned security authorities / service provider
